The Co-operative has launched a recruitment drive to find 1,000 staff for its new regional distribution centre in Andover.
The food retailer needs 550 warehouse operatives, 300 drivers and around 150 admin and management staff at its multi-temperature depot based at Andover Commercial Park in Hampshire.
Logistics company Norbert Dentressangle has been awarded the contract to run transport operations at Andover, while warehouse operations will be operated in-house by The Co-operative Group.
Mark Leonard, The Co-operative’s regional head of logistics, said: “Andover is an excellent location to serve our stores in the south of England and we have launched a major recruitment drive to find the 1,000 staff required to operate the site.
“This is a major investment in and commitment to the local community and we would encourage as many people from the Andover area to apply.”
The new positions will be filled between May 2011 and February 2012.
The 467,000sq ft regional distribution centre is due to open in June this year, when it will distribute more than 1.3m cases every week to more than 400 stores across southern England.
Around 50 staff are expected to transfer from the distribution centre in Fareham to take up various positions in Andover, following the £28 million capital investment.
Leonard said “The Co-operative Group’s food business has significantly grown in recent years and our logistics operation has undergone a major overhaul to develop accordingly. This investment will help us to continue to provide high standards of service to our customers, while also allowing for further growth.”
