Goods moved by GB-registered HGVs increased by 11 per cent to 139 billion tonne kilometres in the UK in 2010 compared to 2009, according to figures released by the Department for Transport.
The road freight statistics report found that goods transported by own account operators increased by three per cent over the same period, and goods lifted by third party operators increased by 16 per cent.
The figures also show that the percentage share of freight moved by rigid vehicles has declined from 31 per cent in 1990 to 24 per cent in 2000, and to 22 per cent in 2010.
