Rail freight competition welcomed

A House of Lords committee report pushing for greater competition on through-Channel tunnel rail freight routes has been welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA).The report is urging the UK and French governments to ensure that all rail freight operators have fairer access to the tunnel.

Called Liberalising Rail Freight Movement in the EU, the report was published by The Lords European Union Sub-Committee B (Internal Market).

Dr Andrew Traill, the FTA’s head of Rail Freight, says: “Deals cobbled together during the construction and financing of the tunnel over ten years ago tied Eurotunnel’s hands over its charging policies.
