The University of Hull is investing £15M in establishing a Logistics Institute for the study and analysis of manufacturing processes in a bid to establish the region as a European centre of excellence in port logistics and supply chain management. Supported by Yorkshire Forward, Humber Trade Zone, Humber Forum and the European Regional Development Fund, the new Logistics Institute will add value to industry through new innovations which could help organisations improve efficiency in the supply, production and transportation of their products.

Gefco UK, one of Europe’s leading transport and logistics groups, has announced a new direct route between Coventry and Porto that will enable goods to be shipped between the UK and Portugal, the heart of Portuguese industry, in 72 hours door-to-door. The new direct route will provide a competitive, reliable and better quality service for customers. The line haul adds to the 380 road routes already operational across 14 countries and will give GEFCO Group the capacity of 262 departures per day across the entire European network.

Unisto Electronic Seals has created a solution whereby it is providing RFID at the transport level by tagging and securing the trailers, enabling the whole process from manufacture to sale of goods to be tracked at every stage. This, says Unisto, gives an unprecedented level of control to ensure timely delivery, reduce pilfering, and most importantly, reduce costs. System installations with a number of retailers and an express parcel carrier have shown that the system pays for itself in less than a year.
