Women in logistics

A new networking group called Women in Logistics has been set up with the aim of getting more women into the sector, as well as promoting women’s interests and providing networking opportunities.

According to statistics women account for 22 per cent of the logistics workforce in England, compared with 46 per cent in other sectors, and they hold fewer than ten per cent of the managerial roles.

The group held its first meeting in January which was attended by 19 members. Since then membership has increased to 81 and plans are afoot to increase membership and awareness further throughout 2009 and to hold three more events.

Members come from a number of professions, including public transport, road haulage, supply chain and logistics consultants, IT, human resources, retail, manufacturing, third party logistics companies, executive search and logistics management.

The group offers support and mentoring for younger professionals, advice and encouragement to women entering the industry, providing personal development and support for members through planned activities.
