British confectionery manufacturer Swizzels Matlow has installed a Manhattan Associates warehouse management system at its distribution centre in Adlington, Cheshire.

The family-owned business, which is famous for retro sweets including Drumsticks, Love Hearts and New Refreshers, extended the size of its Adlington site by some ten per cent while introducing the Manhattan system and radio frequency scanning capability to help increase product throughput and speed up order processing times.

Swizzels has so far seen improved inventory control, staff productivity and customer service levels.

The Integtrated Logistics system has replaced a paper-based system, which the company said "was not sophisticated enough to accurately manage the fast turnover of stock" - which had grown to  more than 1,000 pallets per week.

Swizzel's operations director said: “Since deploying the system, we have maintained a tighter control on the movement of stock. The resulting operational efficiencies have meant that fewer hours are spent completing the same amount of work. Tasks are more targeted and, as we have visibility into who is doing what, we can redeploy resource much more logically. Overall, this has meant that we have been able to provide a better quality of service to our customers.”
