British Airways World Cargo has started shipping Great Britain’s kit to China ahead of this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic games in Beijing.
Over the next few weeks BA World Cargo will be transporting more than 80 pursuit, road, mountain and BMX bikes for the cycling teams; 18 pole vaults, javelins and other equipment for the athletics team; archery gear, fencing sabres and foils, along with medical support equipment and 170 day and competition wheelchairs for the Paralympic team.
In preparation, BA World Cargo has been working with individual teams to determine optimum loading plans, in some cases practising beforehand to ensure equipment is loaded correctly and efficiently, such as using 5.3m drainpipes in place of pole vaults.
The first task for the airline was to carry three canoes, measuring nearly four metres in length and weighing 10kg, in the bellyhold. Olympic canoeists Fiona Pennie, Campbell Walsh and David Florence were also onboard the British Airways flight.
