General Mills is moving more of its products from Spain and southern France into the UK by sea.
New deals with MacAndrews and DFDS Suardiaz Line mean that 90 per cent of the foods heading to the UK from General Mills’ plants in northern Spain and the south of France are now coming to the UK by sea, compared with 70 per cent previously.
In total some 2,150,000 road miles will be saved in the transport of products which include Green Giant sweet corn, Old El Paso Mexican meal kits, Nature Valley cereal bars and its new Wanchai Ferry Chinese meal kits.
The foods are being carried as sea freight from Bilbao to Liverpool before being transported to their final destinations by road, while all containers are fully loaded to maximise the space used. Pallets are then reduced in size once in the UK to meet customer specifications.
David Howorth, General Mills UK’s supply chain director, said: “We want to be the best and strive for continuous improvement in everything we do, and that includes our responsibility in bringing a range of market leading foods to consumers in a fashion that is environmentally responsible.
The new deals are part of General Mills’ commitment to meeting ongoing Food and Drink Federation greener transport targets.
