Stock visibility avoids costly storage

In a move to support leading UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s effectively manage the international supply and delivery of its wine range, Exel is shipping New Zealand wines into the UK for the retailer. The company has also developed an online wine centre which enables Sainsbury’s to view and manage stock from 15-plus wineries in New Zealand, thereby having greater control and visibility of supplies.

Wines produced from across the country are gathered, or consolidated, for delivery by Exel and shipped out of Auckland to the UK port of Tilbury.

Exel has developed, and will manage, a specialist IT solution for the customer – a virtual wine centre. This web-based, wine ‘warehouse’ is a supplier management tool enabling the customer to view and order stock from the New Zealand wineries. The visibility of both stock and suppliers avoids the need to develop costly storage facilities, or physical stockholding facilities. It also serves as a facility for placing and tracking wine orders and ensures the swift transport of wines from overseas into the UK.
