Burnley takes over from Christensen

Roger Burnley, formerly supply chain director for discount clothing retailer Matalan, has replaced Lawrence Christensen as Sainsbury’s new supply chain director. Burnley spent his early career in retail management and was buying at B&Q before joining Asda / Wal-Mart in 1996, where he held several positions before becoming supply chain director in 2001.

Commenting on his role at Matalan, Burnley says: “Over the last 12 months, and well ahead of system change, improvements in the supply chain have been made through focusing on people and processes. Tighter control of stock, for example, is reflected in the lower level of terminal stocks than a year ago.”

Christensen has agreed to stay on three days a week as an advisor until December 2006, to ensure an orderly handover of responsibilities. He was brought in last year to improve the supermarket’s distribution problems, however his role was always a temporary one.
