Seafield wins contract to service £55m casting plant

Seafield Logistics has won a contract to handle and control stock for the new ‘Caster 5’ at Corus’ steelworks in Scunthorpe. The deal will involve the movement and stocking of product to and from the plant, amounting up to 100,000 million tonnes of steel a year.
Castor 5, built by Corus at a cost of £55 million, replaces the ‘Bloom and Billet’ mill.
It is stocked by Seafield using 14 stocking grounds, known as prairies, spread across the 28 square mile site. The steel produced there is transported by Seafield to the Rod and Medium Section Mills on the site. The Rod Mill reduces the section size to as low as 5.5mm while the Medium Section Mill produces sectional steel of medium size including a new product – a railway line up to 120 metres continuous length which is transported on specially adapted rail wagons all over the UK and into Europe.
As well as providing a site based operation for Corus, Seafield also operates haulage services to and from the site.
