DB Schenker is expanding its European land transport services, particularly in South-East Europe, with additional regular scheduled services, new facilities and technology.

Karl Nutzinger, chief executive Europe, said: “In many talks we have had with customers throughout Europe, we have established that, even in times of crisis, there is a demand for additional services and new solutions. This is true for the growth markets in South-East Europe, for example, in which we are able to provide valuable support to customers from trade and industry with our local knowledge.”
The focal point for shipments between East and West is a 26m euro hub which has just opened in the Austrian town of Bergheim, near Salzburg. Around EUR 26 million was invested in the terminal, which serves as a hub for flows of goods in Europe, efficiently linking modes of transport.
The 800,000 sq ft site is now home to a 100,000 sq ft transhipment hall. The facility has 125 loading bays and includes state-of-the-art technology for tracking consignments in the cross docking system. Rail transport is integrated into logistics service through a dedicated siding, which connects the terminal to the rail network.
The new DB Schenker terminal in Sofia, Bulgaria, has also started operations. The facility covers an area of 50,000 sq ft, has 30 loading bays, and two private sidings with a total length of around 220 metres.
