TNT rolls out more electric trucks

TNT will roll out 20 Smith Electric Vehicles Newton trucks for 20 of its delivery rounds in the first quarter of 2013.

The Newton Generation 2 model trucks have a paylod of two tonnes. They will be introduced at TNT depots in Barking, Enfield, Bristol, Birmingham and Leeds.

The new trucks have a more efficient charging system that maintains power stored in the Lithium batteries when the vehicle is not in use or plugged in.

Simon Harper, director of operations TNT Express, said: “While continuing to reduce carbon emissions, this next generation of all-electric trucks has significant improvements in reliability which will be good news for our customers.

“Greater range, coupled with an easier charging process, will enable us to improve our service levels.”
