Birds Eye has signed a £30 million, three-year contract with DHL Supply Chain to manage distribution of all Birds Eye frozen foods to UK customers following a competitive tender process.
The deal will see DHL handle some 550,000 pallets a year and manage activity to support seasonal peaks in product harvesting.
DHL will transport all Birds Eye frozen foods by road and ferry from all European production points to the company’s national distribution centre in Birmingham, as well as onward distribution to retail and wholesale distribution centres.
The contract will be carried out using a shared user network which will increase flexibility in Birds Eye’s supply chain and reduce costs. It will also include the use of additional fleet where necessary.
Under the agreement, DHL has created a new system with reduced supply chain costs and fewer transport miles.
Paul Dunne, planning and logistics director at Birds Eye, said: “Flexibility and responsiveness are essential requirements for our business and we have jointly designed a solution that is able to cope with demands across the year, while consistently meeting the service levels our customer require.”
