The Logistics College North West has launched a new initiative to encourage women living in the North West to consider a career in the logistics industry. “Women on the Move” has been set up with funding from the European Social Fund and hopes to register 330 women within two years.
It said: “The logistics industry is the fifth largest industry in the UK. It employ’s over 1.7 million people with an average salary of £22k! But with only nine percent of the total workforce being female, the industry eagerly awaits new female recruits to help meet a current shortfall in skills.”
The Logistics College North West says that many people outside the industry see the only opportunities being in driving. The college says that it is trying to change that and offer women the chance to train in a number of other supply chain roles including; customer service, management and team leadership.
A spokesperson said that people can sign up right away for courses. The scheme is currently operating in Cumbria and will soon be expanding to Preston, Lancaster, Manchester and Cheshire.
