Richards gets fuel boost from SCR

Norfolk haulier Jack Richards has added 10 Mercedes-Benz Actros 2544 tractor units to its fleet, and so far it has seen returns of around 0.4mpg more than expected.

It reckons selective catalytic reduction is a simpler system than exhaust gas recirculation to meet Euro 4.

New managing director Peter Brown said: “It’s a more elegant engineering solution.”

The EGR approach was over-engineering the problem, he said.

SCR uses AdBlue, which is carried in a separate tank, and a catalytic converter, to reduce nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions.
