Retailer John David Group, which owns the JD Sports clothing chain, said sales surged over Christmas as customers bought branded tracksuits and trainers. The company, which reported a loss in the first half, has since shown a “substantial improvement” in sales, margins and cost ratios, said chairman Peter Cowgill. Like-for-like sales in the eight weeks to 7 January rose 4.7 per cent. Sports clothing sales grew six per cent though fashion clothing fell 7.5 per cent.
