CEVA Logistics has announced a reverse logistics solution dedicated to the transport, storage and processing of end-of-life electric-vehicle (EV) batteries.
The company said it plans to build a network of Battery Logistics Centers across Europe that will be able to address up to 80% of European volumes by 2030.
The programme follows a trial begun in 2022 at CEVA’s finished vehicle logistics (FVL) hub in Ghislenghien, Belgium, which the company said had successfully validated its Battery Logistics Center concept.
CEVA is targeting a multimillion-euro rollout to 10 countries by 2027, with centres to be installed in France, the UK and Spain by the end of this year and additional sites planned in Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic in 2026-27.
The initiative is intended to support the automotive industry’s transition to electric mobility and to strengthen circular value chains amid tightening environmental regulation.
CEVA cited analysis indicating that approximately eight million lithium-ion batteries will reach end of life in Europe over the next five years.
The company’s model rests on three pillars: pan-European collection and ADR-compliant transport; value-added services at each centre, including battery diagnostics, deep discharge, dismantling, regeneration and reconditioning; and end-to-end traceability with real-time status monitoring.
Each Battery Logistics Center will be located within designated areas of CEVA’s FVL platforms and will include specialised storage zones and secure containment units in temperature-controlled containers with racking, temperature and humidity monitoring, and 24/7 alarm systems.
After assessment, batteries will either be reconditioned or dismantled, with modules and waste routed to recycling centres or second-life facilities. Collections will be organised from car dealerships, vehicle resellers and end-of-life vehicle centres.
“The automotive industry is undergoing major changes with the rise of electric vehicles,” said Mathieu Friedberg, CEO, CEVA Logistics.
“Given the challenges of recycling and reusing batteries, it seemed essential to us, drawing on our logistics expertise, to propose robust and virtuous solutions to support the automotive sector in strengthening the circular economy.”
CEVA said the network is designed to give manufacturers a scalable, compliant option for handling used EV batteries, with the aim of improving safety, recovery rates and supply chain resilience as volumes grow.
