Lidl Austria has signed a framework agreement for the delivery of 42 Mercedes-Benz battery-electric trucks by mid-2027.
The vehicles, which will be used for grocery retail store deliveries, are in addition to 14 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 units already delivered.
Each eActros 600 has a battery capacity of more than 600 kilowatt hours (kWh) and can achieve a range of up to 500km on a single charge (based on 40 tonnes total towing weight at 20°C).
The electric trucks use lithium iron phosphate battery cells, which are expected to maintain at least 80% battery health after 10 years of operation or 1.2 million kilometres travelled.
Lidl’s first electric trucks entered operation in mid-August. By the end of the year, 20 eActros 600 vehicles are expected to be in use across the country, supported by a recently opened charging park at Lidl’s logistics site in Laakirchen.
“We are very proud of the successful market launch of the eActros 600 in Austria. We are also delighted to support Lidl on its journey towards sustainable transport,” commented Jens Tittel, CEO Daimler Truck Austria.
As part of its group-wide climate strategy to achieve Net Zero by 2050, Lidl Austria is focusing on developing sustainable transport options. It has been using electric trucks since 2024, with electrical charging capacity provided by solar photovoltaic systems on the roofs of logistics centres.
