A new Morocco–Europe shortsea shipping service now connects the ports of Agadir and Casablanca in Morocco directly with the UK and the Netherlands.
Launched by Samskip, the Morocco–Europe service is designed to move cargo in a “faster, greener, and smarter” way, offering an alternative to long-haul road transport.
“This connection marks a milestone for Samskip, as well as for the future of logistics between North Africa and Northern Europe,” remarked Ólafur Orri Ólafsson, CEO of Samskip Group.
“We’ve listened closely to the needs of growers, exporters, and importers, and built a service that puts their success first, combining reliability, sustainability, and scale.”
With weekly sailings from Agadir and Casablanca to Tilbury and Rotterdam, Samskip’s says its new Morocco–Europe service connects exporters directly to more than 30 destinations across Europe.
Shipments from Agadir will focus on refrigerated and frozen produce. They will be supported by a new fleet of GPS-equipped reefer containers that regulate oxygen, carbon dioxide, humidity, and temperature to keep fruit and vegetables fresh for up to 45 days.
Meanwhile, Casablanca will serve as the hub for a broader spectrum of exports, including automotive parts, chemicals, packaging and construction materials.
According to Samskip, by shifting from road to sea transport, Moroccan exporters can reduce their CO₂ emissions by up to 80% while also benefiting from a faster, more predictable service.
In May, XPO Logistics announced the expansion of its operations in Morocco, with the launch of new routes connecting the Port of Tangier with Algeciras and Motril in Spain.
