Walmart has announced that it intends to increase deployment of ambient IoT technology throughout its supply chain.
As part of a collaboration with Wiliot, Walmart will integrate millions of battery-free Bluetooth sensors, known as IoT Pixels, to track pallets across its supply chain operations. The goal is to install 90 million by the end of 2026.
Walmart, one of the world’s largest omnichannel retailers, said the collaboration is “designed to dramatically enhance supply chain efficiency, inventory accuracy, and cold chain compliance”.
The solution is already deployed across 500 Walmart locations. The company plans expansion to cover 4,600 Walmart Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets, and over 40 distribution centres in 2026.
Tal Tamir, CEO of Wiliot stated that the nationwide US deployment adds “a new layer of digitalisation to Walmart’s supply chain”, by offering real-time insights and automation that drive greater efficiency, accuracy, and responsiveness.
Wiliot claims the initiative is “one of the largest ambient IoT deployments to date,” providing a new source of supply chain data for Walmart’s expanding use of AI.
The technology collaboration is already making a significant impact by eliminating manual tasks and delivering automated alerts. It has also helped to improve visibility by resolving discrepancies in inventory, ensuring smoother operations and improved customer experiences.
“With Wiliot’s ambient IoT technology, coupled with our AI systems, we’re not only optimising our supply chain to make faster, smarter inventory decisions, but we’re also tackling one of the hardest problems in retail—knowing exactly what we own and where it is at any given moment”.
