Another British electric vehicle company is benefiting from President Obama’s determination to push ahead with mass electric van production.
Modec has teamed up with US-based Navistar International as part of a joint venture, which will see them produce and sell all-electric delivery vans for the US market.
Navistar has been awarded a grant of £23 million ($39m), which will be used to accelerate electric vehicle production.
Smiths Electric Vehicles has also been awarded a £6 million ($10m) grant.
Modec and Navistar will produce and sell electric Class 2c-3 commercial vehicles in North, Central and South America. The delivery vehicles will primarily be used for urban-suburban pickup and deliveries.
Daniel Ustian, Navistar chairman, president, and chief executive, said: “The all-electric delivery vehicle is a concrete example of what business and government can do when we work together. The future is now with this electric vehicle. In fact, we already have interested customers, including some of the most respected names in the industry.”
