Wincanton has become the first logistics company to have received a supply chain award from Aerospace, Defence and Security’s (ADS) Enterprise Excellence Board.

The Supply Chain 21st Century (SC21) Silver Award recognises companies that are focused on accelerating the improvement of the defence supply chain. The company was independently assessed by the West of England Aerospace Forum against the European Foundation for Quality Measurement matrix (EFQM), lean manufacturing, relationships and on quality and delivery.

Phil Curnock, SC21 Programme Manager at ADS, said: “Wincanton’s case for recognition and our subsequent review of its practices was one of only three silver awards currently awarded to the Aerospace and Defence Industry. It was also the first award for a logistics support company, which is delivering sustainable world class performance at its Yeovil site. The key is now sustaining and building this level of performance throughout its UK operations.”

ADS was formed in October from the merger of the Association of Police and Public Security Suppliers, the Defence Manufacturers Association and the Society of British Aerospace Companies and is the UK’s AeroSpace, Defence and Security trade body.

SC21 was launched in July 2006 with 19 founder members and has grow to more than 550 members. It is a change programme designed to accelerate the competitiveness of the aerospace and defence industry by raising the performance of its supply chains. International competition, together with the challenges posed by the defence industrial strategy, necessitates rapid improvement in the effectiveness of supply chains. At the same time, industry must ensure that it delivers competitive solutions for customers while maintaining profitable business growth.

Andy Sheppard, business unit director at Wincanton, said: “To be recognised with this award is an incredible achievement. Logistics is a fundamental part of the defence industry and in what is a highly competitive marketplace, we need to be able to demonstrate to our customers our commitment to offer increased value. While we are not in business to win awards, we still take great pride in receiving this kind of blue ribbon recognition, as it shows we are offering a best-in-class service that is built upon robust foundations.”
