Whitbread takes 12 double-deckers

Whitbread is investing in 12 double-deck trailers for its distribution fleet, to save fuel and reduce emissions whilst delivering to its Costa stores, Premier Inn hotels, and its restaurant brands Beefeater Grill, Brewers Fayre, Table Table and Taybarns.

The new trailers will replace 16 standard trailers and two tractor units. Six of the new trailers will supply Costa stores and six will supply Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants.

They were built by Gray and Adams and are on a 7 year lease contract hire arrangement between Kuehne and Nagel and Hill Hire.

The new trailers take 52 standard pallets versus 26 carried on a conventional trailer, and Whitbread estimates they will save over £400,000 per year in fuel and driver costs, and will result in 1.5 million fewer kilometres being travelled every year.

It expects the reduced number of journeys and greater fuel efficiency from the double-decks to reduce its carbon emissions by 23 per cent compared with its current operation.

Whitbread wants to reduce its direct carbon emissions by 26 per cent by 2020.
