Felixstowe is starting work on the new North Rail Terminal – its third rail terminal and the first designed to handle 30 wagon freight trains
Each train will be capable of carrying 90 teu. It will be equipped initially with three Rail Mounted Gantry cranes increasing to six when the terminal is working at full capacity.
The ground-breaking ceremony was performed by transport minister Mike Penning.
Clemence Cheng, managing director of HPH Central Europe, said: “We already move 750,000 teu per year by rail and the new terminal will eventually more than double our capacity for intermodal traffic.”
Felixstowe currently operates 29 daily services to 17 inland destinations including Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Cleveland, Birmingham, Doncaster, Tilbury, Selby, Hams Hall, Wakefield, Ditton (Widnes), Birch Coppice, Scunthorpe and Bristol.
