Yearsley Group is to start work on a £20m expansion of its Heywood site that includes a 160,000 sq ft cold store.
The first two phases will be built this year creating 27,000 pallet spaces. When complete it will have 40,000 pallet spaces.
The 13.6 acre site at Hareshill Distribution Park is next door to Yearsley’s HQ building which has 40,000 pallet spaces.
The aim is to create a northern “super-hub” where stock will be consolidated for more efficient delivery to retailers and food service organisations.
Managing director Harry Yearsley said: “It will become the first of two national ‘super-hubs’ for Yearsley Group, enabling us to consolidate more stock in single, strategically located stores, thereby increasing efficiency and reducing carbon output.
“The cold storage and distribution market has developed over recent years and customers at both ends of the supply chain are demanding faster, more efficient, environmentally conscious services from their logistics partners.”
Yearsley will look at sites in the east and southern regions for second super-hub which will be strategically located to complement the North West operation and other regional depots.
