Amazon Australia has announced plans to invest more than A$750m (c. £400m) in a new robotics fulfilment centre in Brisbane, Queensland, expanding its logistics infrastructure in the country.
The facility, scheduled for completion in 2028, will cover approximately 150,000m² across four levels. It is expected to become one of the largest warehouses built in Queensland. Once fully operational, the site will be capable of processing more than 125 million packages annually.
The fulfilment centre will support orders placed on Amazon.com.au and is expected to store up to 15 million smaller items, including electronics, beauty products, toys and household goods. The site will also process products from small and medium-sized businesses in Queensland that sell through Amazon’s marketplace.
Amazon said the project will create more than 1,000 permanent roles once operational, while construction and facility fit-out are expected to generate around 2,000 jobs.
“People are at the heart of our operations, and by combining innovative robotics technology with skilled local talent in this state-of-the-art site, we’re building a workplace where people and technology work hand in hand to deliver for our customers,” said Wayne Angus, Amazon Australia’s director of operations. “This investment demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to Queensland customers and our confidence in the state’s growing economy.”
The facility will incorporate Amazon’s robotics systems. which are designed to improve operational efficiency and support workers with repetitive tasks. These include the Hercules mobile robot, which transports shelving units weighing up to 500kg to workstations, and Sparrow, a robotic arm that uses computer vision and AI to identify and sort items during order fulfilment.
