French shipping company CMA CGM has launched a new direct service between the Port of Gothenburg and Asia.
With the launch of the new route, the port now has three direct lines for containers to and from Asia every week. The other services are operated by Maersk/Hapag-Lloyd and MSC.
“It is the first time in the port’s 400-year history that we have three direct services to and from Asia, so of course this is both special and exciting – but also logical,” stated Claes Sundmark, vice president of sales and marketing at the Port of Gothenburg.
CMA CGM’s new Gothenburg-Asia service will call at the following ports: Ningbo – Shanghai – Yantian – Singapore – Tangier – Dunkirk – Southampton – Gothenburg – Gdansk – Le Havre – Southampton – Port Klang – Ningbo.
Last year some 700,000 containers were shipped between Sweden and Asia, most via the Port of Gothenburg.
Exports consisted primarily of forest products such as paper, cardboard, pulp, and sawn timber, as well as machinery and industrial components. Imports from Asia comprised consumer goods, clothing, home electronics, and food products.
According to the port, the growth in trade with Asia is “an important factor” behind its move toward a new record year in terms of container volumes.
Maersk/Hapag-Lloyd, through their Gemini cooperation, recently adjusted the Asia-Europe route that ended in Bremerhaven, Germany to make the Port of Gothenburg its new end destination in Europe. Earlier, in April 2025, MSC launched a new Gothenburg-Asia container service.
All three services call at the Port of Gothenburg container terminal, operated by APM Terminals.
