DHL Supply Chain is investing in a major logistics facility in Derby that will be redeveloped as a shared-user e-commerce fulfilment centre, with George at Asda confirmed as the anchor customer.
The site will be recommissioned and equipped with advanced automation to support high-volume online retail operations. Once operational, fulfilment centre will consolidate all George.com clothing e-commerce activity into a single location.
Automation at the site will include an AutoStore goods-to-person system and pocket sorter technology designed to accelerate order processing and increase warehouse efficiency. When fully operational, DHL said the site will be able to handle up to 350,000 units per day, with order turnaround times of around 30 minutes.
The Derby project forms part of DHL Supply Chain’s previously announced £550m investment in its UK infrastructure. The facility will operate as a shared-user site and is expected to create around 450 jobs.
Chris Hall, Asda’s VP of logistics, added: “Partnering with DHL will give us the fast, scalable and resilient fulfilment operation we need as our e-commerce business grows.”
Martin Willmor, CEO, DHL Supply Chain UKI, added: “Investing in advanced, e-commerce-ready facilities like Derby is central to how we support our customers’ growth strategies.”
The facility is scheduled to go live in 2027 and will represent DHL Supply Chain’s first deployment of AutoStore technology in the UK.
