Container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd is partnering with WiseTech Global to trial the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to deliver real-time global container visibility, tracking and data collection across ocean supply chains.
As part of the pilot, Hapag-Lloyd has equipped its two million-strong container fleet with IoT devices that transmit location updates, enabling WiseTech to process millions of data points daily and convert them into actionable milestones.
Location and positioning data will be distributed to Hapag-Lloyd customers through various channels, including the CargoWise Cargo Tracker and Container Automation solutions. Later, other platforms will be available.
Beyond standard updates, the collaboration aims to provide highly accurate, real-time insights into container positioning, transit conditions and arrival predictions. For example, customers will be able to detect deviations or delays earlier, improving planning and execution across critical handover points.
“We’ve invested in equipping our entire dry container fleet with IoT technology to provide better service and reliability to our customers,” said Karsten Schmidt, director Live Position & Track & Trace at Hapag-Lloyd.
“Working with WiseTech, we can integrate the data from our smart containers into the systems our customers use every day, providing actionable predictive insights rather than just dots on a map. “
As the trial progresses, the partners will assess data quality, scalability and customer feedback. The goal of delivering a fully integrated, value-added ocean container visibility solution for global supply chains.
WiseTech said the initiative marks a pivotal moment for the industry, as carriers and technology providers work towards a more transparent, resilient and digitally enabled global supply chain.
