Misurata Free Zone (MFZ) has signed a public–private partnership (PPP) with Maha Capital Partners and Terminal Investment Limited to modernise, manage, develop and expand Misurata Free Zone Port.
Established in 2000, MFZ is Libya’s main container gateway, handling around 60-65% of the country’s container trade.
The PPP aims to transform the port into a modern, efficient, high-capacity facility, strengthening Libya’s role in regional and global trade.
The partnership seeks to gradually increase the port’s capacity to 4 million TEUs per year through a phased development programme.
Planned upgrades include expanding container-handling capacity to accommodate larger vessels, deploying state-of-the-art terminal equipment and digital systems and enhancing safety, performance and environmental standards.
It also includes direct integration of the port with the Free Zone and the surrounding industrial and logistics ecosystem, boosting opportunities for SMEs, manufacturing, and value-added services.
“This partnership represents an important milestone in Libya’s economic recovery and infrastructure modernisation,” said Libya’s Prime Minister Abdulhamid Aldabiba.
“It demonstrates our commitment to rebuilding strategic assets through structured public–private cooperation and to creating the conditions for sustainable growth, investment, and international confidence.”
According to initial estimates the project is expected to create 2,000 direct jobs, with more than 40,000 indirect roles across transport, industry and supply chain.
Total investment under the strategic partnership is expected to reach US$2.7bn (c. £2bn).
Chairman of Misurata Free Zone, Muhsin Sigutri, said: “This partnership reflects the Misurata Free Zone’s determination to build modern, globally competitive infrastructure that supports new industries, creates local jobs, and strengthens Libya’s position within regional and international supply chains.”
