David Abney is to take over as chief executive officer of UPS when Scott Davis retires in September.
Abney, who is currently chief operating officer, will be only the 11th CEO of the US parcel giant in its 107 year history.

He began his UPS career in 1974 as a part-time package loader. Over the course of his 40-year career, he held various operational positions leading to his current position.
Following his retirement as CEO, Scott Davis will become non-executive chairman of the group.
UPS has also created a new position of chief commercial officer. The role has been taken by Alan Gershenhorn to lead development and implementation of broad strategic growth and innovation initiatives focused on creating distinctive customer value. These include new market development, innovative future products and solutions, increased speed-to-market and stronger customer engagement across the entire UPS portfolio.
Gershenhorn, a 35-year UPS veteran, previously served as chief sales, marketing and strategy officer.
UPS has also appointed Kate Gutmann and Mitch Nichols to the UPS management committee, the executive leadership team responsible for setting and executing the strategic direction for the company’s worldwide operations.
Gutmann will be responsible for leading UPS’s global sales solutions and customer engagement strategy. Her new role as senior vice president of worldwide sales and solutions was created to further market penetration through broader customer relationships.
Nichols, a 27-year UPS veteran and current president of UPS Airlines, has been promoted to a newly created position on the management committee as senior vice president of transport and engineering. His responsibilities will include UPS Airlines, transport, engineering and sustainability.
Other senior management changes:
Brendan Canavan, a 33-year UPS veteran, has become the new president of UPS Airlines.
Nando Cesarone, a 24-year UPS veteran, has become president of UPS Asia Pacific.
Rhonda Clark has been named the company’s chief sustainability officer.
Amy Whitley has been named the company’s first chief diversity & inclusion officer.
