The European Commission has recognised the key role that freight transport and logistics are making to the expanded European economy in its new transport policy statement, says the Freight Transport Association.
Responding to the publication of the Commission’s mid-term review of the 2001 Transport White Paper published on the 22nd June 2006, FTA deputy chief executive James Hookham, said: “This is a realistic and pragmatic statement about the role of freight transport in the European economy. We strongly support the Commission’s proposal to develop a freight strategy for Europe and an action plan by 2007 and we look forward to being fully involved in its development and consultation”.
He went on to say that the review marks a welcome departure from the policies in the original 2001 White Paper. He said: “There is less emphasis on modal change and much more on getting the best from each mode, including road transport.” He said that it was clear that the Commission had listened to the views and needs of businesses.
