Gefco is re-opening a disused rail link between two of its major UK vehicle distribution facilities at Sheerness and Corby. Trains will initially run twice a week, replacing 2000 truck journeys per year. Vehicles arriving via boat from France and Spain, will be moved directly onto train wagons carrying up to 150 units at a time.
PSA Peugeot Citroen will be the first to use the service but Gefco plans to expand it to cover other automotive manufacturers as well.
Phil Shankley, managing director of Gefco, said: “We are always looking at ways to unlock efficiencies and develop our services for customers, and reopening the rail link between two of our busiest facilities makes business sense, as well as having a positive environmental impact.”
