Asda has opened is national distribution centre at Redhouse Business Park, Doncaster. The site is managed by Wincanton and uses voice-picking technology.
The 655,000 sq ft dedicated general merchandise centre will handle more than 5,000 product lines. Everything from ironing boards to paint, electrical goods to seasonal garden products will be managed at the site. The warehouse is also capable of handling nearly 100 containers a week and will dispatch over 600 loads per week to the 11 Asda regional distribution centres it services.
Craig Taylor, head of distribution, general merchandise, Asda, said: “There has been so much hard work going on behind the scenes to ensure that this site opens on schedule, which is testament to the quality of the people we have employed. We have developed a strong relationship with Wincanton and together, we are now we are a major employer in the Doncaster region. The opening of the site is especially timely as nearly a third of sales in our stores come from general merchandise.”
Some 300 people are employed by Wincanton at the site, and this is set to increase to 600 when the warehouse reaches full capacity in September. It also houses a gym, learning centre and modern canteen that are available for the use of all staff.
