Freight forwarder Air Menzies International (AMI) has opened a new import off-airport de-group facility in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The 47,500ft2 (c. 4,400m2) facility, located at O.R. Tambo International Airport, is “designed to enhance operational efficiency and lower costs for importers”.
AMI explained that customers can collect their cargo using a Goods Received Note (GRN) issued by the company, along with an Identity Verification Systems (IVS) identification card. Goods are held under customs supervision, ensuring full regulatory compliance while minimising the risk of loss or tampering. During the in-transit period, customers can inspect, repackage, test, or sample their goods prior to final importation.
In addition, the de-group facility provides a free holding period on the day of arrival plus two additional days, including weekends and public holidays.
According to AMI, the facility will help customers improve inventory management and mitigate risk by better aligning cargo arrivals with marketing and sales schedules.
“South Africa is a core operation and a major trade lane for AMI,” explained Carlos Font, CEO, Air Menzies International. “Our ability to leverage our in-transit facilities in Johannesburg will provide faster transit times and quicker delivery, improved tracking and visibility and professional handling and storage that minimise end-to-end costs for our clients.”
Tracey Less, import manager, AMI South Africa, added that the new de-group facility in Johannesburg will help streamline trade logistics across the Africa region. “We can de-consolidate large consignments, hold goods until shipping windows, or manage last-mile distribution more effectively. It supports a more agile logistics network,” Less said.
