Autonomous driving technology company Zelostech has demonstrated its autonomous RoboVan at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges as part of efforts to test autonomous logistics technology in real-world port operations.
The vehicle operated on the port’s K102 route, exploring questions around safety, operational efficiency, infrastructure, regulation and the conditions required for large-scale deployment of autonomous vehicles in logistics.
The demonstration coincided with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ Autonomous Summit, which focused on moving autonomous technologies from trials towards implementation. Technologies demonstrated at the event included autonomous trucks from Zelostech, DAF and Volvo, as well as remotely operated rail and inland shipping systems.
Zelostech has also opened what it describes as Europe’s first RoboVan Experience Center at the port. Its vehicles will continue operating on the K102 route, providing a longer-term environment in which logistics operators and other stakeholders can evaluate the technology.
Brant Liu, general manager Europe at Zelostech, said: “Autonomous mobility is moving from a technology demonstration toward an important component of the future logistics ecosystem.”
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges said Zelostech’s fully autonomous logistics vehicle is authorised to operate on public roads in Belgium. The vehicle is due to operate for a year on a route encompassing the city, wider region and port.
Jean-Luc Crucke, Belgium’s federal minister for mobility, climate and ecological transition commented: “Autonomous mobility offers major opportunities for our ports and logistics chains, including by making transport flows safer, more efficient and more sustainable. But its rollout must be safe, responsible and supported by a clear legal framework. That is why testing is important, while in parallel we must also ensure clear and coordinated rules.”
