DP World has launched a new intermodal rail service linking its terminal in Novi Sad, Serbia, with Herne in western Germany, creating a regular rail connection between the Balkans and the Rhine-Ruhr logistics hub.
Operated by Austrian transport company LKW Walter, the service runs three times a week and is designed to provide a faster and more reliable alternative to long-haul trucking between Serbia and Western Europe.
According to DP World, the rail connection can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared with full road transport.
The Novi Sad facility becomes the first terminal in Serbia to offer a regular intermodal rail service to Western Europe.
Gokhan Yurteken, general manager, DP World Novi Sad, said: “By connecting Novi Sad to the Rhine-Ruhr region with a scheduled intermodal service, we’re strengthening Serbia’s integration into European supply chains and reinforcing its role as a strategic trade gateway in Southeast Europe.”
He added that the service will give DP World’s customers a faster and more predictable route from Serbia into Western Europe.
The service has been introduced amid increasing regulatory and operational pressures on long-haul road freight between Serbia and Western Europe, including the rollout of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and stricter driver mobility rules.
Vladica Ćulafić, chief commercial officer, DP World Novi Sad, said: “As regulatory requirements for road transport continue to evolve across the European Union, customers are seeking solutions that offer greater speed, predictability and lower administrative complexity. Intermodal rail offers all three, while also delivering measurable carbon savings.”
