LATAM Cargo Group has introduced virtual reality training at its Miami air cargo hub, with around 550 warehouse employees expected to participate in the initial rollout.
The programme is designed to improve operational safety by allowing employees to practise, manage and respond to real-time scenarios within a controlled digital environment.
Developed in collaboration with Academia LATAM, the airline group’s internal training division, the system features scenarios covering six warehouse pedestrian zones and three specialised training modules for the company’s 250 forklift operators.
The simulations cover procedures including dangerous goods segregation, cargo handling, pedestrian movements and the separation of personnel and machinery.
Daniel Leng, chief operating officer at LATAM Cargo, said: “Integrating Virtual Reality at our Miami hub marks a key step in our operational safety strategy. By placing our teams in critical operational scenarios within an exact replica of their daily work environment, we significantly close the gap between classroom theory and ramp practice.”
The Miami deployment follows an initial rollout for employee onboarding at the Fast Air warehouse in Santiago, Chile. The latest implementation reportedly adds to the range of operational scenarios covered by the training system.
LATAM Cargo said it is assessing the potential to expand the use of the VR training system to other hubs across its network, including locations in Brazil.
