Drone deliveries are set to play a growing role in healthcare logistics after South West London Pathology (SWLP) confirmed plans to expand its drone network across hospitals and primary care sites in the region.
Since February, autonomous drones have been transporting pathology samples from the Nelson Health Centre in Raynes Park to SWLP’s laboratory at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, reducing journey times from around 20 minutes by road to just over three minutes.
SWLP, which serves a population of 1.8 million people and processes 51 million pathology samples each year, is working with healthcare logistics specialist Apian to extend the service to sites including St Helier, Croydon and Kingston hospitals, alongside additional GP and community healthcare facilities.
Simon Brewer, managing director of SWLP, said: “We are investing heavily in automation and digitisation, introducing other cutting-edge technologies to improve diagnostic precision and speed across the network. But the impact of this investment will be restricted if samples are still getting stuck on roads. Drones help us move samples faster, cheaper and greener, and are now a core consideration of our logistics plans.”
According to Apian, more than 2,000 patients have already benefited from deliveries that are up to 85% faster than conventional road transport. The company said drone deliveries are already up to 23% cheaper than urgent courier services on some routes and produce 98% less CO₂ per delivery than diesel vans.
The initiative also marked the first routine use of drones to collect pathology samples from an NHS primary care facility.
Apian, which was founded by NHS doctors, is partnering with Alphabet-owned drone operator Wing to expand healthcare drone services. Wing has completed more than one million commercial deliveries globally and is now supporting the rollout of routine NHS drone logistics across south west London.
The partners said the project provides a blueprint for wider adoption of drone-based healthcare logistics as the NHS continues its shift towards community-based care.
