Walmart is expanding warehouse automation across 25 regional distribution centres in the United States as part of a multi-year agreement involving an initial spending commitment of around US$6 billion (£4.5bn).
The retailer is extending its partnership with warehouse robotics specialist Symbotic to introduce additional AI-enabled automation capabilities across its distribution network, while supporting further opportunities across Walmart’s global supply chain network.
The investment will support e-commerce inventory management, increase warehouse storage capacity and improve the movement of goods through Walmart’s distribution centres.
The technology is intended to help Walmart manage a broader product assortment, improve speed of order fulfilment and provide more reliable stock replenishment across its stores and e-commerce operations.
The US$6bn commitment covers work over several years and multiple locations.
Rob Montgomery, executive vice president for Walmart US Supply Chain Operations, said: “At Walmart, we’re focused on bringing more items to more customers and members, faster than ever. Our investments in the physical and digital supply chain help us serve them however they choose to shop, whether in stores, at the curbside or at home.”
The expanded agreement builds on more than a decade of collaboration between Walmart and Symbotic, which supplies AI-enabled robotics and warehouse automation systems.
