Paul Milnes has joined Fowler Welch as head of operations – ambient. The £40m ambient operation accounts for some 25 per cent of the overall Fowler Welch business.
Milnes is the former managing director and major shareholder of JDF Logistics, which after 17 years of operations closed its doors in 2009 following a spate of major customer mergers and takeovers.

He said: “It’s great to be back in the mainstream action with a major operator. I am a 3PL man through and through and, to my mind, Fowler Welch has been one of the most understated players in the industry for some time. We have a fantastic business, even though most people still see us a temperature controlled operation. Yet we have a strong and fast-growing stake in ambient distribution. My job now is to develop our sites and the teams involved even further, to build on that solid foundation.”
Nick Hay, who took over as managing director at Fowler Welch in late 2010, said, “As a leading chill consolidator, we have a wealth of experience in adding value for our customers. With Paul now leading the ambient area of our business we have a fantastic opportunity to continue to grow through Paul and the team’s experience; coupled with the broader skills of the Fowler Welch business.”
