Consumer Products
Winner: Spirit Pub Company with Kuehne + Nagel
Last year the Consumer Products category produced the Overall winner with Danone Baby Nutrition. This year that honour passed to another sector. All five shortlisted entries had good scores, but there were two that stood out – Diageo and Spirit Pub Company with Kuehne + Nagel.
Diageo’s global supply operations for spirits, wine and beer involves the manufacture, packaging and distribution of hundreds of products to over 180 markets from 117 production and distribution facilities. The company has set ambitious environmental targets for carbon, water and waste, with a goal to reduce carbon emissions from global production sites by 50 per cent by 2015. In the last three months Diageo has completed a £6 million bio-energy project at its Glenlossie distillery in Speyside, burning the spent grain from whisky distillation. The judges were impressed by the entry that showed the company’s dedication and commitment to sustainability, even though the full benefits may not be seen for a few years to come. It was a close run thing, but the judges thought one other entry just had the edge.
In 2011 Spirit Pub Company believed there was room for improvement in their food distribution strategy for its 780 managed and 480 leased pubs in the UK. Switching logistics service provider and working more collaboratively with Kuehne + Nagel, Spirit Pub Company has implemented multiple projects, including a supply chain consolidation exercise to create a “one-stop shop” delivery solution for all the company’s pubs using a direct ordering facility through the logistics service provider. A backhaul solution has also been introduced to enable waste recycling and a vendor managed inventory facility enables suppliers to store product in the 3PL’s depots and call off stock as and when required. The judges liked the way the Spirit Pub Company was using supply chain improvement to transform their business, enabling the company to focus on the customer experience. For this reason the Award for the Consumer Products category went to Spirit Pub Company.
