After suggesting on social media that the US would introduce a 50% tariff on goods entering the US from the European Union, US president Donald Trump has since confirmed that the proposed 1 June 2025 date for the implementation of the tariff would be pushed back to 9 July 2025 as negotiations continue.
In a post on social media platform Trump Social on 23 May, Trump claimed the EU was “formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on trade” and remarked: “Our discussions with them are going nowhere!”
As a result of this, he recommended a “straight 50% tariff on the European Union”, which he said would enter into force on 1 June.
Following this, in an interview with the press in New Jersey on 26 May, Trump said that he had spoke with president of the European Comission Ursula von der Leyen, and that an agreement had been reached to push back the date of the tariffs implementation to 9 July, while “serious negotiations” take place.
Von der Leyen herself has made reference to the call with Trump in an X post, stating: “Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.”
Good call with @POTUS.
The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship.
Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.
To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9.

This comes after the UK government announced that it has agreed trade deals with both the US and the EU.
