The Kion Group, parent company of Linde Material Handling, is consulting on proposals to close its plant at Merthyr Tydfil which makes heavy forklift trucks.
Theodor Maurer, Kion board member and CEO of Linde Material Handling, said: “Our goal is to significantly improve our container handling and heavy truck business. In addition we intend to further increase the long-term competitiveness of our offerings to customers through a revised strategy for the container handling business and the heavy forklift truck segment of our Linde brand.”
The site employs 203 people in manufacturing, engineering, sales, service and administration. There is a 90 day consultation period and Kion said that if the consultation did result in closure it would offer employees the opportunity to apply for vacant positions at other sites.
Kion employs more than 1,700 people in the UK and purchases some €75 million of goods and services from UK-based suppliers.
